This NI FM8 Dubstep video tutorial is very helpful for a number of reasons. Recently there was an update to FM8 which changed the file format of the presets, so if you have the current version of the program and try to load an older .ksd file you will need to convert it. This is well explained in the video, as well as where they need to be stored to be seen by the FM8 browser.

There are a ton of great presets included in the library of FM8, and if you were a user of FM7 then you probably have a large collection of patches from which you can base new sounds off of. This is what the bulk of this lesson is about, taking a preset and making it your own by changing the sound to your liking and then adding it back to your library of patches.

He shows you some priceless tips and tricks to create some incredibly insane FM8 Dubstep style synths, and along the way he also explains many best practices and insights to keep in mind for all of your sound design sessions in FM8. The process of sound creation using frequency modulation synthesis is very different than the more common subtractive synthesis used by most soft synths nowadays, and he takes the time to help you understand some of the fundamentals that you need to understand to end up with the sounds you want, rather then simply randomly turning knobs and moving sliders.

Aw, this was a really nice post. In concept I would like to put in writing like this moreover – taking time and actual effort to make a very good article… however what can I say… I procrastinate alot and by no means seem to get one thing done.

Great stuff! I wish there were more websites like this. Can you show us how to automate parameters inside FM8?
